It was a sunny but chilly Saturday and we were sitting around thinking of an activity we could do indoors. I got to digging around in the garage and found our Cornhole game boards. What a perfect game to get us up and moving!
Getting started with Cornhole is pretty simple:
First, you’ll need Cornhole game boards and bags. The game can be found at most big box stores, sporting goods stores and on-line.
Next, you’ll need to find a space to set up. Cornhole can be played either indoors or outdoors. I’ve seen the game played in recreation centers, nursing homes, gyms, on the grass, sidewalks, driveways, parking lots… Just about any area that has some open space and level ground is great for playing cornhole.
Here’s a link to the official site of the American Cornhole Association. You’ll find tons of information on official rules of the game and official game equipment. We are not professionals so the board that I have at home is what is considered the “tailgate” size. It is smaller and made from a different material when compared to the official regulation board. I think the tailgate size is good for casual, at-home use.
Here’s are sets similar to what I have at home:

When playing indoors at home, we usually set up our Cornhole boards in the living room where we have the most open space. Technically, the boards should be placed opposite from each other at a certain distance. But we modify by placing the boards a little closer together so they are easier to see and a shorter distance to throw the bags.
Sometimes we place the boards next to each other in the foyer. This helps to keep the bags in one spot because of the surrounding walls. Many times we’ve spent looking for lost bags that have been tossed behind the couch, up in the ceiling fan or under the table!
It’s ok when our bags go missing because we found out that Beanie Babies make great substitute bags! Caitlin has her favorites, the black cats Zippy and Zip. Her beloved stuffed cats make the game a lot more fun!
But eventually we did end up losing some bags and had to replace them. Not to worry because there are tons of replacement bags to choose from. Here are a couple that I think are really fun (affiliate links):
I’ve observed Caitlin and her friends increase their skills in many areas while enjoying the game. Here are some of the benefits for those with cognitive and physical disabilities:
- Can do the activity while standing or sitting
- Throwing the bag can be done with hands, feet or other appropriate modification
- Practice following rules and taking turns
- Improve aiming skills, focus and concentration
- Practice social skills when playing in a group
- Celebrate accomplishments
- Practice math by keeping score
- Encourages a competitive spirit
Here are other items with good reviews that I thought would help those with disabilities to enjoy the game of Cornhole (affiliate links):
- The LED lights and glow-in the dark bags could be helpful for those with visual impairments to better locate the board, hole and edges of the board
- These premium all-wood boards can be painted so you can customize however you want! They are available in both tailgate and regulation size.
- This mini cornhole game can be enjoyed sitting at a table
- Enjoy Cornhole as a spectator by downloading the official cornhole tournament App
Whether played with others or on your own, Cornhole is a fun game that people of all abilities can enjoy!
