Rugg pond is a nature area located in Kalkaska County Michigan. In 1904, the Kalkaska Light and Power Company built a dam and power plant there. In 1950, Consumers Power bought it and then in 1953, sold it to Kalkaska County for $1! Unfortunately in 1980, the dam was condemned by the Army Corp of Engineers. But two years later, a group of concerned citizens formed “Save Rugg Pond” and thanks to their efforts, the nature area was preserved for future generations to enjoy.
We spent a short time here on a sunny September afternoon. The walking path is flat dirt and grass and Caitlin handled it easily with little assistance. The path takes you to a bench where you can relax and enjoy the view. The calm water is nestled among towering trees that were showing early signs of autumn. The sky was vast and blue on this day.
In the picture below, behind Scott and Caitlin, there is a boat launch adjacent to the parking lot. The pond looks great for fishing or kayaking, maybe next time!
The area is pretty quiet with the exception of the rushing water from the dam. We wanted to take a closer look so we carefully navigated down the steep steps. Caitlin sat on the ground for a rest while Scott stood on top of the outlet tunnel for a different view.
We enjoyed our visit to Rugg Pond. It’s a quiet spot to walk for exercise while enjoying the outdoors in northern Michigan!
